Carrie enters the social-media age in Mike Flanagan’s new series
All eight episodes arrived on Prime Video on October 7, with Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her mother.
Stephen King’s Carrie has a new setting for its familiar horrors: the social-media age. Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode adaptation premiered on Prime Video on October 7, 2026, bringing the story of a bullied teenager discovering telekinetic powers to a full television series. 1
The cruelty now travels online
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, whose sheltered life with her mother, Margaret, gives way to public high school after her father’s death. Amazon’s synopsis places a viral bullying scandal at the centre of the new adaptation, with its effects spreading through the community as Carrie’s powers emerge.
The contemporary setting changes how humiliation reaches an audience. King’s story already linked the pressures of school and home; the series’ announced premise adds the speed and exposure of online life. Amazon describes the production as the first series adaptation of the novel, distinguishing its eight-episode format from earlier screen versions.
Flanagan writes, produces and directs
Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, with King also executive producing. He directed the opening two and closing two episodes. Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata each directed one of the four middle instalments, according to 2.
Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White. The school ensemble includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen and Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross. Amber Midthunder plays Miss Desjardin, while Matthew Lillard appears as Principal Grayle. The production comes from Amazon MGM Studios.
A return to the novel that began it all
Carrie was King’s debut novel, published by Doubleday on April 5, 1974. His official account of its origins says the title character drew on two girls he knew at high school. The original story pairs a teenager’s supernatural abilities with the ordinary forces bearing down on her: mistreatment by classmates and a controlling, intensely religious mother. 3
Brian De Palma’s film adaptation followed in November 1976, with Sissy Spacek as Carrie and Piper Laurie as Margaret. The new series arrives in the film’s 50th-anniversary year, putting another cast and a different format around a story first published more than half a century ago. 4
