Cleveland’s 21-strikeout night finished a remarkable Division Series comeback
Gavin Williams and three relievers shut out the White Sox in Game 5, while José Ramírez supplied the only runs.
The Cleveland Guardians turned a deciding playoff game into a procession of missed bats on October 10, 2026. Their pitchers struck out 21 Chicago White Sox hitters in a 2–0 home victory that completed a comeback from a two-game deficit in the best-of-five American League Division Series. [1] [2]
Twenty-one strikeouts, nine innings
MLB identifies the total as the most strikeouts in any nine-inning major-league game since at least 1900. [3]
Gavin Williams accounted for 12 of them. Just two days after recording the final out of Game 4 in relief, he returned as the Game 5 starter and kept Chicago scoreless into the sixth inning. The staff allowed only three hits. [1]
A normal nine-inning defensive game requires 27 outs. Twenty-one strikeouts therefore meant Cleveland secured more than three-quarters of those outs without needing a ball to be fielded in play. That is arithmetic from the final total, rather than a separate historical claim. [1] [3]
The sixth-inning escape
Chicago’s best opening came in the sixth. Williams hit Colson Montgomery, then allowed a two-out single to Kyle Teel and walked Miguel Vargas to load the bases. Left-hander Erik Sabrowski entered and struck out Munetaka Murakami to end the threat. [2]
Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith carried the lead through the final innings. Smith struck out Murakami, Andrew Benintendi and Tristan Peters in the ninth, ending both the game and Chicago’s season. The White Sox had already struck out 19 times in Game 3; Cleveland surpassed that total in the deciding game. [2]
One swing supplied the difference
White Sox starter Sean Burke retired Cleveland’s first nine hitters. Steven Kwan opened the fourth with a single, bringing up José Ramírez, whose two-run homer produced all the scoring. [2]
The pitch was only 0.74 feet above the ground. AP, citing MLB Statcast, reported it was the lowest pitch hit for a postseason home run since pitch tracking began in 2008. [1]
Cleveland became the 11th team to win a best-of-five series after falling behind 0–2. The achievement combined a rare series recovery with a record-setting final game: one low-pitch home run was enough because the pitching staff gave Chicago so few chances to turn contact into offense. [1]
